The Power of The Tongue
January 13th, 2007 by Patricia Bishop
Well the holidays are past and it’s back to work for most of us. I trust your holidays were blessed as were ours. As I continue on my journey with Jesus I wanted to share with you this message on “The Power of The Tongue”
We know that the Bible doesn’t just contain the word of God, It IS THE WORD OF GOD! So let’s look at the word together here.
- In the book of James we learn that the tongue is a little member. The tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity, among our members, that it defiles the whole body and sets on fire the course of nature, and it is set on fire of hell. (James 3:5-6)
- The book of Proverbs, chapter 18 verse 21 says, Death and life are in the power of the tongue.
- James 3:11 Asks us does a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
- James 3:8; But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
Here is another look at the tongue that is used to speak.
- Matthew 8:8 The centurion asked Jesus to just speak the word and he knew his servant would be healed.
- Mark 11:23 Jesus instructs us to speak to the mountain (the problems that have risen before us).
- Genesis 1:3 We understand here that God didn’t just think the world created but He actually spoke it into existence.
I will list scriptures here for reading before I comment.
- James 1:26
- James 3:5-18
- Proverbs 18:21
- Matthew 8:8-13
- Luke 4:1-19
- Mark 11:23
- Matthew 17:15-20
- Genesis chapter 1
- Hebrews 11:1-3
In this lesson I want you to understand how incredibly important it is that you become mindful of what you say. Your words do have creative power. This can be either positive or negative, productive or destructive.
Please take your time in the scripture reading, pray and allow the Word of God to become alive to you, ask God to open your understanding and give you revelation knowledge.
I want to be careful not to do the work for you, it’s good for you to search the scriptures, dig’em out so-to-speak and most of all, let the Holy Spirit be your teacher.
As you are reading the scriptures pay close attention to what God tells us about our tongue, this means our language not the small organ that dwells within your mouth. Although medically speaking without the tongue you wouldn’t be able to speak so it all goes hand-in-hand.
Take notice in Genesis, God created the heavens and the earth. Yes, He did this by faith -BUT- notice that He didn’t just think about it but He spoke the world into existence. If you read more than just the first three scriptures you will see that He continued to speak and things were created and did appear.
Jesus taught us to say “speak” to the mountain. This was not a literal mountain but this was in reference to whatever problem that would be standing in your way. Again faith was used but we understand that it was accomplished once it was spoken/said.
The scriptures in Proverbs & James clearly tell us how much weight our words carry. If you wonder why things are happening the way they are in your life, take some time and examine “what you may be saying.” Although you may be praying all the right things, making your request known to God and praying His will, word and desires for your life, you could be canceling your own faith by speaking negative things about your situation. Let me give you an example.
A man needs a job or perhaps a better job. He asks God to lead Him and guide Him and open the doors for him to obtain a job that will supply all his needs with enough abundance to help meet others needs too, a job that will give him time for God and his family. This is a good request, it is not selfish and if prayed in faith this man can expect that God will grant this request. Now after prayer lets take a look at the words that can be spoken and what they create.
1. I don’t know why I can’t get a phone call I’ve applied to so many places, I’m destined to be a loser.
2. I’m stuck in this dead end job seemingly with no way out.
3. I’m so tired of this job I don’t know how much longer I can stand it.
These are negative, destructive words. They have canceled out his request because his faith has wavered and he speaks with a double-mind. Take a look at how his request could have been handled.
1. I thank you Father that you have heard my prayer and you know my needs before I asked you. Although I can’t see it yet, I know that it is coming and I am ready.
2. God is my source and my supply, he will bless me to have all I have need of.
3. Give me strength Lord to endure the position I currently have until the change you provide comes.
You see, because we are human, we are going to have thoughts, (our mind/thoughts is where the devil wages warfare upon us). He has no place or victory over us unless we give him that power by providing him opportunity through the words we speak and our actions.
God knows our thoughts but satan cannot read our mind. He can only act upon what you speak. Do you see that you can be your own worst enemy by what information you give the devil? He goes to and fro in the earth as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. When you speak God’s word satan cannot hang out with you.
In the scriptures that I have given you to read you’ll see where satan came to tempt Jesus. Jesus answered him with the written word of God but Jesus just didn’t think satan gone or wave a magic wand, he didn’t just hand satan a bible and say hey, read this, he “said” in other words he spoke “It is written.” The power of the spoken word and satan had no choice but to flee. If we will submit ourselves to God, resist the devil, he will flee from us. (James 4:7)
When we speak, God is listening and so is satan. Our words open the door for either our heavenly Father to go to work for us or for satan to begin his work in our lives. Remember as long as it is just a thought and you have not spoken it you can bring into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ, but what you speak is what counts. (II Corinthians 10:5)
Let me expose one of satans biggest lies that we are often guilty of teaching to children.
“Sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never harm me.” Once you have completed this lesson you too will see that this little saying spawned right from the pits of hell itself.
I love you, God Bless you and your study of His Holy Word.
