Confession -OR- Testimony
July 16th, 2007 by Patricia Bishop
We live in a generation where contentment is almost non-existent. Have we forgotten that a man’s worth or value is not measured by his material possessions? There is more to this folks than a name-it and claim-it Jesus. The one who must ask God for “things” has not yet fully appreciated the treasure he has in Christ already. We all know that the bible tells us that if we will delight ourselves in the Lord that He will give us the desires of our hearts. I would like to stop right there and show you something that God taught me about that very scripture.
(Psalms 37:4-5)
Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
Commit thy way unto the LORD; trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
Do you see what this is saying? First of all to delight yourself in the Lord means that you find great joy or pleasure in Him, you are highly pleased, happy and rejoice in Him. This means that you are content which means happy enough with what you have in Him (Jesus), satisfied.
Then it says when you realize (delight) that He is your all-in-all, He Himself is what brings you joy, happiness and pleasure, you will be content and satisfied with Jesus (this will only happen when we realize that everything we have need of is in Him alone), Then HE shall give you the desires of thine heart.
Did you catch that? He said, HE would GIVE YOU the DESIRES………of your heart. He did NOT say that He would give you what Your heart desires but rather He would give you the desires of your heart. In other words He Himself, Jesus, will place in you and cause your heart to desire Him.
Desires are what you long for, what you crave, what you want. Do you see how Jesus wants us to long for Him as He longed for the Father. He wants us to seek to please Him and find pleasure in Him as He did in the Father. The Father wants us to realize that Jesus is all we need or we could say that everything we have need of is met in Jesus. Jesus told us that we should take no thought for what we will eat or wear, these things were just a given to those that serve Him. He said the Father knows that we have need of these things and they will be met but rather that we should seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these other things shall be added unto us.
(Matthew 6:25 -34) Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?
Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed?
(For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things.
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
Now that we have thought about what it means to Delight yourself in the Lord, the next verse says in order for Him to bring it to pass we must Commit our way to the Lord and Trust in Him.
To commit means to give charge or trust, deliver for safekeeping, entrust, to bind as by promise or pledge.
Trust means having confidence, reliability, a firm belief, honesty and integrity, ability to depend on.
Let me ask you this, how do you trust someone or commit yourself to someone that you do not know? Can you stand on someone else’s confession or testimony? How do you know that you can trust Jesus if you don’t know Him?
How do you know that He is a provider if you have never had a need that only He could meet thus making you a first hand eye witness to His power of provision for you. How do you know that He is a healer if you have never been in need of healing and witness for yourself that He indeed healed you or seeing with your own eyes the healing of another?
How do you know that you have received salvation if you have never experienced for yourself and met Jesus? It must be a personal, eye witness account that you alone experience for yourself.
For by grace are you saved through faith, and that not of yourself; It is by grace (unmerited favor of God) through faith that we are saved. This is the action of how salvation is obtained, yet it brings us right back to what is faith? Faith is trust (confidence), a firm belief in God. Again I ask, how do you trust something or someone that you do not know? The bible tells us that Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Jesus is the Word. (Romans 10:17)
.(John 1:1-5) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
The same was in the beginning with God.
All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
In him was life; and the life was the light of men.
And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.
We start our relationship with Jesus by getting to know Him through His Word (the Bible). Then we accept Him into our hearts because we believe the testimony of Christ. We do this by grace through faith receiving forgiveness of our sins by confession of those sins and repentance (turning away from sin) and believing Jesus to forgive us of our sins. Thus receiving the gift of God which is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. This is salvation folks, being born again into the kingdom of God having our souls saved from sin.
Then begins our journey to grow in this relationship. This doesn’t happen over night. It takes time to grow into this kind of trust. Obviously we will learn through many situations that arise in our lives and will be given opportunity to take matters into our own hands searching for answers/solutions/resolutions or we can surrender ourselves and situations to Jesus and learn to trust Him. In every situation that we choose to trust Jesus, step -by- step our relationship with Him will expand into something we can’t live without and in time we will develop full confidence in Him. This will then allow us to testify of Him, establishing a fact beyond doubt because we have become living proof, a reflection of Him.
If and when we can truly say (Galatians 2:20) I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me. When this type of relationship has been developed you will not have to worry about asking for anything amiss because Jesus Himself, will have given you the desires of your heart. You will not wonder what the will of God is, you will know what the will of God is. You will walk in victory because Christ is victorious and it will become evident in your life. Then our joy is full because we know whom we have believed and trusted. Our needs are all met because we are satisfied with Jesus. Then our light shines before all men and testifies of Jesus Christ our Lord.
Only after we have a revelation of the Lord for ourselves can we testify of Him. Prior to receiving this revelation we are only capable of confession which at best is spiritually weak for it is simply the declaration of our beliefs, yet we are lacking in proof having no testimony until we are able to give a eye witness account of an encounter with Christ where He revealed Himself to us. The Testimony of Jesus always springs forth from the Revelation of Christ. If we do not have the Revelation then we cannot have the Testimony. That is to say, we cannot bear witness of what we have seen and heard if we have not, in fact, seen or heard anything.
Testifying of ourselves is self righteousness. Our testimony must be of Jesus Christ. So the next time you are asked to give a testimony you now have the understanding and know the difference between a confession and a testimony. A confession is stating your beliefs, declaring your faith and a testimony is bearing witness to Jesus, establishing a fact and giving a first hand account of what He has done in your life, declaring who He is.
Even though God gave this to me, in sharing it with you I confess that I have a way to go to reach this level of relationship. However, I’m diligently working on dying to self and learning to lean on Jesus, my best and dearest friend. The reason I am alive and exist is a living testimony of His Great Love, Grace, Mercy and Keeping Power. I will rejoice in God my Savior. My God How Great Thou Art!
As I continue my journey with Him,
